Harrison County Schools Seal

Regarding the incident at Robert C. Byrd High School today there was a non-related criminal investigation involving a student of that school who is a juvenile. This investigation started yesterday, September 11, 2024 and at NO time was there a threat to Robert C. Byrd High School. This situation escalated out of control due to the numerous rumors and conjecture posted on social media. Our primary goal is to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for all. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work together to keep our schools safe.

I want to address a serious issue that has come to our attention—false threats targeting schools. These incidents cause unnecessary fear and disruption, not only to our students and staff but to the entire community.

We take every threat seriously and work closely with all agencies to ensure the safety of everyone in our schools. Multiple schools have assigned law enforcement within the school and there are always active patrols at all schools. School safety is paramount for all law enforcement and these threats are treated seriously. False threats, whether made as a prank or with ill intent, can have severe consequences. They waste valuable resources and can lead to disciplinary action, legal consequences, and harm to our school environment.

We encourage parents to talk to their children about the seriousness of making such threats, even if they believe it to be a joke. Students should also be reminded to report any suspicious activity or behavior to a trusted adult or school official immediately.

We encourage reporting through the West Virginia Safe Schools Helpline that can be accessed through the Harrison County Board of Education website or directly at https://www.safeschoolhelpline.com/ . Please utilize this reporting system and avoid unnecessary rumors being spread on social media outlets.

As information becomes available it will be made public.
