Denver, Colorado (Friday, January, 6th, 2024) –
Members of the South Harrison FFA traveled to Denver Colorado last week to compete in the National Western Roundup Livestock Judging Competition a part of the 118th National Western Stock Show. Team Members; Hope Woods, Spencer Nolan, Emma Hitt, and Alivia Baker placed 8th in Goat Judging, 9th in Swine Judging, 11th in Cattle Judging and 11th Overall Team in the National Contest.
The contest was comprised of 12 classes of livestock. Of these 12 classes, five were beef, four were sheep/goat, and three were swine. All of the classes were comprised of four animals and the animals were designated by numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4. Performance data and a situation statement for some breeding classes was provided.
Reasons were taken on six classes, one market and one breeding of each species. Contestants were not permitted to use notes while giving oral reason. Reasons classes consisted of market, breeding, and/or performance classes. Advisor John Lockhart said of the team “These students have put in almost a year or more of preparation for this first contest of the livestock judging season. I am exceptionally proud of what they have accomplished for a team from an eastern state to compete with the livestock powerhouses of the West and Midwest is a testament to our students grit and dedication.”
