Members of the South Harrison FFA Chapter spent the better part of the past week entering exhibits at the Underwood Youth Building at the State Fair of West Virginia. The South Harrison FFA Chapter had the Best of Show Educational Youth Exhibit. Members Ashley Martin, Delainey Lowther, Mahaliegh Mearns, Makenna Post, Michael Radcliff, Neveah Hayhurst, and Spencer Nolan exhibited various produce items with Mearns having the Best of Show tomatoes.
The South Harrison FFA Livestock Judging competed in the 2nd Annual Cattlemen’s Classic Livestock Judging Competition at the Large Stock Arena.
Students participating in the Cattlemen’s Contest make accurate and logical observations of livestock, decide on the desirable traits in marketing and breeding cattle, and select and market livestock that will satisfy consumer demands and provide increased economic returns to producers.
Understanding what makes a good market or breeding beef, is valuable knowledge for the decisions every livestock producer has to make. The competition also encourages students to communicate proficiently, interpret data— skills that translate into other career opportunities.
Member Lucas Nutt placed 4th High Individually in the competition, Emma Hitt placed 5th High Individual other members competing were Alivia Baker, Delainey Lowther,
Camryn Lowther, Neveah Hayhurst, and Elena Medina.
