Library
Welcome to the Library
Mrs. Hill, Librarian
This should be a really great year. Mrs. Morrison and I continue to collaborate with our teachers in finding projects that involve research, technology skills and classroom topics. I am again adding a variety of book reviews to the student assignments. Some of last years’ reviews were really fun!
The theme of the Reading Program this year will be PAWS TO READ. Each student who reads their goal will choose a cat or dog to add to the bulletin board. (Oreo hopes there will be lots more cats than dogs!) . We hope our students will read some “PAWSITIVELY” great books and win some great prizes! Please encourage your child to read and keep their Reading Record filled in.
As always, we can use donations of kleenex and other supplies and nice books your children have outgrown. Thanks so much for the donations of stuffed animals. They look great in the Library! Thanks for all your support!
About Mrs. Hill
I grew up in upstate New York and graduated from Brigham Young University back in the dark ages! I received my Library Certification from the University of Montana. I have lived in the East, the West and the South, and love living in West Virginia, especially in the fall. I have four children, three grandsons, a brand new granddaughter, plus my famous cat, Oreo. I love to quilt and of course to read.
My Library Goals
First and foremost is to cultivate a love for reading and for books.
Second is to teach students to access information, both through books and through computer technology.
Third is to support the School Curriculum and assist teachers by providing resources and information
Library Curriculum
The Library Curriculum is based on recommendations by the State Department of Education.
Last year I began incorporating Library Centers into my K-2 Curriculum. I have four centers and the students rotate through the four centers during the month. Each month the theme of the Centers changes. Most of the themes are based on my STAR AUTHORS. The fours Centers are: 1. Arts and Crafts, 2. Writing and Reading Response, 3. Puzzle and games, and 4. “Pillows” (this means they can lounge on the pillows and look at books). At the end of the year, the students create a booklet including some of their Center related work. The Centers were very successful last year and I am working to improve the activities.
My basic schedule for each class is:
Kindergarten-A theme-based Storytime followed by Library Centers. Kindergarten students begin checking books in November.
1st and 2nd Grade-A theme based Storytime and then time to find books for checkout. Book related activities are provided to work on in extra time. We feature some of our star Authors monthly during the Storytimes and Centers.
3rd and 4th Grade-A read aloud chapter book, followed by Library Instruction and then check out time.
5th Grade-Library and Research Instruction, followed by book checkout.
POLICIES
Students check out on their assigned Library day, but may also come in before school in the morning, or at other times arranged by their teacher. Students may check out books as follows:
Kindergarten-1 book
1st-2 books
2nd-3 books
3,4,5--3 books
Books check out for two weeks and may be renewed if no one is waiting for them. Students with a book more than a month overdue may not check out until it is returned or paid for. Notices are sent home to notify parents of overdue books. Please contact me (via livegrades) if you have some concerns about a lost or damaged book, or questions about the policy.
STAR AUTHORS
I have many favorite authors and feature at least one of them each month in my storytelling. The students should be well acquainted with my favorite, Steven Kellogg, as well as Lois Ehlert, Jan Brett, Marc Brown, Tomie dePaola and many others.
LIBRARY SKILLS
The students are taught library skills which help the to find books in the library, find information in reference books and access the internet for reliable information on topics of interest. The students give oral and written book reports and study about different kinds of literature—poetry, fairy tales, folk tales and informational books. In conjunction with their classroom teachers and Mrs. Morrison in the Computer Lab, the 2-5 grade students will also being doing research and preparing a presentation on a topic of interest.
